The Summer Laboratory Science Program at Yale New Haven Health System is offering undergraduate STEM majors in the biomedical or life sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, medical laboratory sciences) an opportunity to explore career options and gain experience in the clinical laboratory environment. Laboratory scientists are an integral part of an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals dedicated to patients' health. Clinical laboratory work is a unique and essential discipline in healthcare, in that, a patient's diagnosis, treatment, and health often directly depend upon the laboratory testing results. In the laboratory, scientists work with blood, tissue, and body fluid specimens. They perform high complexity tests using state-of-the-art instrumentation. They are also responsible for the accuracy and validity of testing results. As part of this position, selected applicants will have the opportunity to perform pre-analytical functions, work on laboratory-related projects, and observe high-complexity testing. This may include assisting laboratory personnel with aliquoting, preparing, extracting, and centrifuging biological specimens collected from patients as well as instrument preparation and loading, and administrative tasks.
